The New Democracy Workshop invites the community and friends to an open workshop on Ontario's Citizens' Assembly and what it does and doesn't mean for civic engagement in democratic life. Join us Monday, February 5, 5 - 7 PM at Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy Building at 144 College at the north west corner of College and University. Room 1210 on the east side of the building. Co-animator Professor Peter Pennefather will chair Opening presentations based on public appearances before Citizens Assembly: Dr Liss Jeffrey (KMDI and McLuhan global research network) and Robert Rodbourne (Managing editor, NetiZen News). The New Democracy Workshop ( NDW)has now met three times. Next regular meeting is Monday, February 12, at 8:30 AM at Wymilwood Cafe, on Charles Street East at Museum Station, opposite Isabel Bader Hall, in Victoria College area. Last Monday we heard from Frieda Luk on the current focus of her masters work on the blogosphere. The netizen-news and ecommons/agora projects will circulate the special issue with participation from NDW members. Issues: pro and con proportional representation, role of newer media, of parties, Q does a focus on electoral reform occlude serious consideration of democratic life between elections, and more. Ricardo ( visiting from Brazil) will be back, as will Fen McKelvey from ComCult and the Code Politics Project.
Friday afternoons, 4 - 6 pm, a nomad research group has met since early January as part of the McLuhan diaspora.

Buy Nothing Day happens on Friday and eCommons/agora will be there, November 24th!
The Laurier Students' Public Interest Research Group is organising a day-long event in the Concourse with lectures and give aways, in recognition of Buy Nothing Day. At 11 am Liss Jeffrey, PhD, the Director of the McLuhan Global Research Network and Adjunct Faculty at Laurier's Department of Communication Studies will present "Needed, not just wanted: Media literacy education for all Canadians." A small group of associates is currently reviewing the present status of citizen engagement in e-democracy, locally, provincially, and federally. What exactly is 'citizen centric federalism'? What has happened to some of the initiatives that have been proposed? What have been the results of the pilots? A fall seminar will be held to report on our findings, and plan for future research and action.
